Post modernism & visual culture

Glossary

Post modernism
A late 20th century movement that is characterized by broad scepticism and subjectivism. It focuses on the philosophy, the arts, architecture and the criticism which marked the departure from modernism. Its characteristics are anti authoritarianism and the refusal to take authority of any single style of definition of what art is.

Modernism
A late 19th – mid 20th century movement. It had an impact on art, literature, architecture as it rejected tradition. It modified traditional beliefs and had a global shift on how society viewed things.

Anti-modernism
Defined as a philosophical orientation that is somewhat difficult to define but also rejects the modernist ideals and behaviours.

Hyper modernism
Hyper modernism is extreme modernism. It deconstructs the material of the form function duality of post modernism and creates it into a new design, often taking in the form of new media technologies and cyber culture.

Structuralism
The knowledge and nature of human life and has a literal perception.

Post structuralism
An effort to understand, interpret or shape a social environment, it encourages a way of looking at the world and questions the aspects of what we know.

High culture
Cultural objects have a higher value within society and is often shared by the elitists.

Low culture
Is a contrast to high culture, it takes the form of popular culture that has mass appeal, which could include things like gossip magazine, comic books or tattoo art to name a few.

What are you looking at? - Will Gompertz

I have annotated parts of the article that I thought were important to highlight. I found this article pretty interesting, it Made me think about how some artists don't like to associate much with their work and like to keep themselves separate, I feel like this sparks more interest into the actual piece of design instead of the designer, which fully emphasises their work. It also sheds light on the idea that everything has a meaning, from the colour, objects material, the possibilities are endless. it encourages me to think a lot more deeper into designers work and search for something more meaningful. Post modernity is always evolving and changing with the times, so its difficult to depict what is post modern and what isn't.
