Design for exploration

Our first project of the final year of uni is a project to get us up and running again. We picked out a word from the biscuit tin and my word was 'Heat'. Each day we had a task to fulfill and experiment with materials ect.

I firstly researched some synonyms and antonyms to do with my key word. I also gathered some quotes that I thought related and could potentially take inspiration from. Through research I discovered that 'Heat' can be interpreted in so many different ways, emotion, measurement, in racing etc.

I began to experiment with the use of fire (risky I know) but without injury I experimented with burning pieces of paper and liked how organic it was, I couldn't control the way the flame burned through the paper in particular ways I liked so gave me a sense of not having control.
Cutting and sticking
Using cutting and sticking I began to experiment with placements and images. this was my favourite kind of experimentation because I enjoy positioning and layering elements in an interesting way. I also drew up some typefaces that inspired me with the word heat, smoke and fire were the main elements in my typefaces but it allowed me to recreate the organic ness of the flames.

Photography
Gathering the images to do with heat was surprisingly not too dangerous. I wanted to take images that use the macro setting, as I wanted to capture textures and intricate colours within ash and fire. my favourite images were the ones of the boiling kettle, the light in my kettle added a nice blue into the photo, it made it look like crystals. I began to really sway towards using blue in this piece of design, I felt like I didn't want to do the generic warm tones that are associated with heat.

Pattern making
Next, I began to make patterns! I actually really enjoyed getting back into using AI and creating shapes again. I was a little rusty when it came to using the line and shape tool but it soon came back to me!

When making these patterns I wanted to make shapes that seemed sharp, and in the shape of a flames. I relate sharpness to heat, as if burned, you have a quick spike of pain (dismal I know) but nevertheless I explore many different positions of line curvatures shapes and colours to determine how I associated them to my subject.

Colours
I experimented with ink I had left over from previous projects and used a fan brush to replicate the essence of smoke. it was a better idea in my head but feel like this would have been a better outcome if I was able to photoshop it. Unfortunately you can only control smoke so much.

After experimenting with cutting, sticking and burning, I decided to gather some colour palettes. I liked a lot of the colours I gathered and the certain combinations, but I felt it was important for me to not to the usual warm tones and opt for something more cool.

Photography extra
This lead me back to the previous images I had gathered from before of my gas stove at home. only I turned the lights off and let the blue flame stand out a lot more. the contrast between the luminous blue and the black was something I really liked. I started to manipulate the images and create really interesting lines and blurring of colours, almost like a flame.
