‘The treachery of images’ highlights the gap between meaning and language. When Magritte used his chosen words and image, he opened up a conversation about the conventional notion about objects corresponding to words. He looks at the idea that what we want isn’t not as unassuming as what we see, but also the meaning hidden behind what’s is In front of you.
one of our tasks was to draw out Magritte's Treachery of images' pipe and figure out what we saw.
Most of us in the lecture agreed it had connotations of rich, white middle aged men from the 1920's. Pipes signified class and their place in society as rich business owners. Smoking a pipe was only done by the upper class.
The script text in the image is also quite elegant and classy, which to me could signify wealth.
